Cyprus, a former British colony, became independent in 1960. The official name of Cyprus is The Republic of Cyprus. The island entered joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. Cyprus lies in the Eastern Mediterranean and covers an area of 9,250 Square kilometers. Cyprus is approximately 240 km's in length and approximately 100 km's wide.
